China to Costa Rica Shipping Introduction
Hello everyone! This video will introduce the shipping service to Costa Rica, one of our company’s key products.
1. Overview of Costa Rica
Costa Rica is located in Central America, bordered by the Caribbean Sea to the east and the Pacific Ocean to the west. The country mainly imports machinery, fertilizers, and food products, and exports agricultural products such as coffee and bananas.
2. Key Ports of Costa Rica
Moin Port: It is the largest port in Costa Rica, located in the same port area as Puerto Limón. It is on the eastern side of Costa Rica, and ships need to pass through the Panama Canal.
Puerto Caldera: It is the second largest port in Costa Rica, located on the west coast, and ships do not need to pass through the Panama Canal.
3. Costa Rica’s Secondary Ports
Puntarenas Port: The cargo is transferred by truck from Puerto Caldera, and it takes 1 day to reach the destination.
Golfito Port: The cargo is transferred by truck from Puerto Caldera, and it takes about 11 hours to reach the destination.
4. Inland Points in Costa Rica
For inland destinations, cargo can be unloaded at either Puerto Caldera on the west coast or Moin Port on the east coast. Based on our experience, we recommend choosing Puerto Caldera to avoid delays caused by congestion at the Panama ports.
Heredia: Containers transferred from either Caldera or Moin ports by truck will arrive in 1 day. We recommend choosing Caldera to avoid congestion at the Panama ports.
San José: As the capital of Costa Rica, containers transferred from either Caldera or Moin ports by truck will arrive in 1 day. We recommend choosing Caldera to avoid congestion at the Panama ports.
5. MOIN Port and PUERTO LIMÓN Port
Moin Port and Puerto Limón are actually the same region, located 8 kilometers apart on the east coast.
Historical Background: Puerto Limón is a 19th-century old port with insufficient water depth, unable to accommodate large ships.
Modernization: In 2011, the government built a modern container terminal at Moin, APM TERMINALS MOIN, which opened in 2018. Since then, all container ships dock at Moin Port.
Why are there different names?
Although some shipping companies like HPL still use the old name Puerto Limón, all ships actually dock at the APM TERMINALS MOIN terminal. So no matter if the Bill of Lading shows “Puerto Limón” or “Moin,” all containers will be unloaded at Moin Port.
Advantages of Moin Port:
- Water depth of 16 meters, supports ultra-large ships
- Automated terminal with high loading and unloading efficiency
- Strong refrigeration container handling capacity, suitable for exports like bananas and pineapples
